Mike's Ham Barley and Almond Bake

I don't know where he got it, but it's good.

1/2 C slivered almonds
1 Tbsp margarine or butter
1 C uncooked barley
1 C chopped carrots
1 bunch green onions, sliced
2 ribs celery, sliced
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 lb lean smoked ham, cubed
2 tsp dried basil leaves
1 tsp dried oregano leaves
1/4 tsp black pepper
2 (14oz) cans beef broth
1/2 lb fresh green beans, cut in 1" pieces

Preheat oven to 350. Spray 13x9" dish with nonstick spray. Spread almonds in single layer on baking sheet. Bake 5 minutes or until golden brown, stirring frequently. Melt margarine in large skillet. Add barley, carrots, onions, celery and garlic. Cook and stir 2 minutes or until onions are tender. Stir in ham, almonds, basil, oregano and pepper. Pour into prepared dish. Bring broth to a boil over high heat. Pour over barley mixture. Cover tightly with foil and bake 20 minutes. Remove, stir in green beans. Bake, covered, 30 minutes or until barley is tender.
